Eating disorders are a growing problem in the United States, young girls that are in their puberty are the most affected by this problem. Its important to learn to recognize the different sings and symptoms of anorexia nervosa so you can help the affected person.
It has been proven that anorexia is a psychiatric syndrome and needs professional help, but the problem is that most of the time the affected person will deny her problem, they want to live this way because they see it as their lifestyle and a way to have control and have the perfect body image.
However, eating disorders like anorexia often finish in death or long term health problems, so we need to know the symptoms to recognize when a parent or close friend has this problem.
Most common anorexia symptoms:
-The person ceases to menstruate
-She lost a lot of weight in a short period of time and weight 85% less than normal.
-She has strange eating rituals, like hiding her food, eating in her room, missing meals, vomiting after eating.
-she use excessive laxatives
-she exercise excessively many times a day
Other Mental Symptoms are:
-She has a wrong perception of her body image
-She has extreme fear of being fat
-She is obsessed with losing weight
-She denies to have any problem
-She becomes isolated, secretive and avoids social interaction.
Those are some of the most common symptoms of anorexia, if you know of a family member with those symptoms, she needs help and support from the family, try to gain her trust and don't accuse her, because she will feel attacked and will not accept any kind of help.
The most difficult part for parents and doctors is to make the patient cooperate to her recovery, if she does not accept her problem, she will not cooperate. Its important the help of a psychiatric and the family, to make her understand the severity of the problem.
